Romans 15:1–7

1Now, we who are strong should bear the weaknesses of the weak, and not {just} please ourselves. 2Let each one of us please our neighbor for what is good, to be edifying to him. 3Even Christ did not please himself. But, as it is written, “The insults of those who insulted you fell on me.” 4For whatever things were written before were written for our instruction, so that through patience and through the Scriptures’ encouragement we might have hope. 5Now, may the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to be together of the same mind according to Christ Jesus, 6so that with one accord, you may with one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

7Therefore, accept one another, even as Christ also accepted you, to the glory of God.

You will hear this Epistle read at The Good Shepherd Orthodox Church during Holy Week, on Great and Holy Wednesday. It is paired with a Gospel reading from Luke 19:1-10.

In this sermon for the Fourth Sunday of Lent, Sub Dn. Timothy Grace explores the life and teaching of St. John Climacus, author of the Ladder of Divine Ascent. Drawing on the imagery of Jacob's ladder and the structure of this celebrated spiritual classic, he reflects on the Christian life as a long and demanding ascent — and how the Ladder itself becomes a gateway through which God comes down to meet us.
