Holy Thursday Vesperal Divine Liturgy

Holy Thursday begins the final events that lead to the Lord’s Passion. On this day, the Mystical Supper, also called the Last Supper, is celebrated.

Vesperal Divine Liturgy — Thursday 10:00 am

Holy Thursday morning begins with a Vesperal Divine Liturgy commemorating the Mystical Supper. This is actually Holy Thursday evening’s service celebrated in anticipation.  Everyone able should make an effort to receive Holy Communion at this service as it was at the Mystical Supper that our Lord instituted the Holy Eucharist. At this Liturgy, a second Host is consecrated and kept in the Tabernacle. It is from this Host that Holy Communion is distributed to the shut-ins and the sick throughout the coming year.

You can read about the Last Supper in several places throughout the Bible including in Mark 14, Luke 22, and John 15.

In this sermon for the Fourth Sunday of Lent, Sub Dn. Timothy Grace explores the life and teaching of St. John Climacus, author of the Ladder of Divine Ascent. Drawing on the imagery of Jacob's ladder and the structure of this celebrated spiritual classic, he reflects on the Christian life as a long and demanding ascent — and how the Ladder itself becomes a gateway through which God comes down to meet us.

Fr. Geoff Harvey reflects on three dimensions of the cross: the cross we venerate as the sign of our salvation, the cross we carry in our daily lives, and the cross that saves through Christ's self-offering for the world. A timely encouragement for the Lenten journey, preached at The Good Shepherd Orthodox Church.
